OOTD #50/316: 50s Movie Inspired

I know! Two “Outfit of the Day” posts back to back. I am a little surprised. However, it makes sense, with this unseasonably warm February weather, one would be hard pressed not to pull out some of their best and favorite pieces. So lately, I have been binge watching 50s classic movies on the Turner Classic Movie channel (TCM), Netflix, and from my own personal collection. In particular, the colorful musicals the era is known for such as “An American in Paris” and “The Bandwagon” – featuring Fred Astaire (one of my favorite stars of the period). Not to mention romantic-comedies like “Designing Woman” and “How to Marry a Millionaire.” And that’s not even including my collection of Audrey Hepburn movies! This, however, is nothing new to me. For those who know me personally, they are well aware that this is a regular pastime for my free time.

OOTD #44/322: Coming Full Circle-Skirt

Hello my darlings. I know its been awhile since my last outfit of the day post, and it is kind of ironic that it comes nearly a month after the first one, but these types of posts are not planned. They are done on the fly, when I am feeling especially good about what I am wearing on that day. Today was one of those days for a very particular reason, that being, I came across the designer for the skirt I happen to be wearing! Actually, if I want to be technical, she found me! I happened to be in Old Town Pasadena on this unseasonably warm weekend. With Valentine’s day being tomorrow, and me being as single as a girl can be, my mother, sister, god-mother, and I decided to celebrate ourselves by enjoying an ultra-girly, afternoon tea party at the Tea Rose Garden. A detailed blog post on this outing will be coming within the next few days, but I will say that if you are ever in need of a reason …

OOTD#14/366: Double Denim Day

Happy New Year! It’s the first post of the year for Darling Afflatus, and I am trying something new. Normally, I am not a fan of the Outfit of The Day (OOTD) concept. I’m not sure why it has never really appealed to me. I suppose I wanted to have something more meaningful to say other than, “look at what I am wearing today.” However, there are days when I am especially fond of an outfit. I may like the look or fit or just its overall comfort. Sometimes, I throw an outfit together in a hurry, and once I can take a good look in the mirror, I am pleasantly surprised. Lately, my style has evolved into more streamlined choices. My taste has gravitated to clean lines, simple silhouettes, subtle details, and sophisticated color combinations. Perhaps, this change is a reflection of me maturing, who knows, but my style has changed enough to get my notice. Well, it is a new year, so I will ride this wave and see where it takes me. …

Subtle Hues: Styling With a Fall Color Palette

Seasons come and seasons go, and Summer in Los Angeles looks like it is finally making an exit. Autumn/Fall is finally here! When it comes to style and fashion, it is hands down my favorite time of the year. Styling outfits requires a little extra effort. This time of year one dresses in layers, and this requires having an eye for mixing colors, patterns, and prints in interesting ways. I am not the sort of woman who automatically defaults to black when the weather cools down. I love color, and insist on choosing color when making clothing purchases. Recently, a friend of mine asked for advice about shopping. Specifically, she asked how do I decide on what colors to buy when picking out my clothes? Considering that my friend is not a big shopper and she is just coming into her own sense of style; this was a legitimate question. Luckily, I already had an answer. I taught her my rules for shopping. They are not so much rules as they are guidelines. This means they can always be …
