OOTD #44/322: Coming Full Circle-Skirt

Hello my darlings. I know its been awhile since my last outfit of the day post, and it is kind of ironic that it comes nearly a month after the first one, but these types of posts are not planned. They are done on the fly, when I am feeling especially good about what I am wearing on that day. Today was one of those days for a very particular reason, that being, I came across the designer for the skirt I happen to be wearing! Actually, if I want to be technical, she found me! I happened to be in Old Town Pasadena on this unseasonably warm weekend. With Valentine’s day being tomorrow, and me being as single as a girl can be, my mother, sister, god-mother, and I decided to celebrate ourselves by enjoying an ultra-girly, afternoon tea party at the Tea Rose Garden. A detailed blog post on this outing will be coming within the next few days, but I will say that if you are ever in need of a reason …

You’re Invited: Red Carpet 2016 Style Concepts

I am very excited about this post because this is the first request I have received since launching Darling Afflatus almost a year ago! It’s an honor to know that some people out there like my writing enough to want me to write for them. In this case, The Black Tux, a company that provides an alternative to the traditional way men shop for formal events has asked that I share some of my favorites from their collection. To add to the fun, with the Oscars just around the corner (February 28th), I have been asked to use this event as the theme, and to share what I myself would love to wear alongside the handsome men in these suits. Because let’s face it, what’s a well-dressed man without a stunning woman on his arm? So, without further ado, let the red-carpet dreams begin. Now, while women’s fashion tends to be my focus and where I feel strongest, I do follow menswear and trends as well. To get a feel for my favorite looks for …

OOTD#14/366: Double Denim Day

Happy New Year! It’s the first post of the year for Darling Afflatus, and I am trying something new. Normally, I am not a fan of the Outfit of The Day (OOTD) concept. I’m not sure why it has never really appealed to me. I suppose I wanted to have something more meaningful to say other than, “look at what I am wearing today.” However, there are days when I am especially fond of an outfit. I may like the look or fit or just its overall comfort. Sometimes, I throw an outfit together in a hurry, and once I can take a good look in the mirror, I am pleasantly surprised. Lately, my style has evolved into more streamlined choices. My taste has gravitated to clean lines, simple silhouettes, subtle details, and sophisticated color combinations. Perhaps, this change is a reflection of me maturing, who knows, but my style has changed enough to get my notice. Well, it is a new year, so I will ride this wave and see where it takes me. …

Black Faces: Why I Surround Myself with Black Faces in Fashion and Beauty

When I was a little girl fashion was one of many escapes from my reality. Catalogs and magazines were the fodder on which my dreams were built. I could sit for hours upon hours looking at the same garments again and again, imagining how I would have styled them. I learned about brands and labels through magazine articles, and what would be the latest and greatest. Studying the drape of a dress, the hem of a skirt, or the silhouette of a blouse; I taught myself how to sketch out the outfits that lived in my head. I kept countless notebooks and sketchpads of my illustrations. I learned about the fit of a garment, the terminology, the difference between an “A”-line versus a full, circle skirt. Or why a sheath dressed worked better on my sister’s athletic build instead of my pear-shaped physique. Eventually, I designed my own prom dress, as well as dresses for several of my friends in high school. Fashion, catalogs, magazines… these were my windows to escape my reality. I once harbored …

Pastel Promises: Pantone’s Spring/Summer 2016 Colors

If you have not heard then you will very soon. Pantone, the leading authority on all things color and color related has announced the color of the year for 2016. This in of its self is not news at all. This has been going on for decades, and it really only matters to those who care about fashion, trends, influences, décor, furnishings, design, and the like. No, the big news this year is that instead of only one color being chosen there were two! Those colors being a classically romantic pink called Rose Quartz and a tranquility inspiring blue called Serenity. Without all the fluff we are looking at pink and baby blue… no this is not a baby shower we are planning. When I decided to share this information with my sister, she replied with, “Oh, so we are going back to basics,” and I realized she had a point. Unless our parents insisted on battling the status quo, the majority of us were either bathed in blue or plastered in pink for the beginning of our …
