Challenging the Gender Binary, One Bag at a Time: Pharrell Williams, the first Male Model in a Chanel Bag Campaign

On 31 Rue Cambon, in Paris, France, Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel opened her first boutique and challenged fashion’s status quo. Now, over a century later, Chanel, still synonymous with luxury, continues to break down barriers with its latest video in the ‘Gabrielle’ bag campaign, which debuted Monday, April 24. In the latest addition, music and style icon, Pharrell Williams, 44, escapades around in an emptied concert hall, playfully riding on trunks of equipment, and engaging in a balancing act along a beam of lights. However, the novelty in this video lies in that Williams is the first male model to be used in a Chanel bag campaign. Advertisements

African-Inspired Fashion: Be Bold, Be Bright, Be Beautiful

I am just a few days shy of my one month anniversary since moving to the bay area. Classes have started, I am steadily growing in confidence at my new job, and I am making an effort to put myself out there and get to know people. In short, I am trying. However, I want to discuss an amazing experience I had over the weekend. My first excursion into the east bay area, specifically Oakland, was to attend the Zuvaa: Pop-Up Tour. To give a little background, Zuvaa is an online marketplace that specializes in promoting African/African-American designers, who utilize African textiles, prints, and designs in their collections. The founder and CEO, Kelechi, describes the company’s mission as follows, “…to empower designers worldwide with the tools to enter a global market and to make woman around the world feel bold and beautiful in vibrant and eccentric African inspired designs.” – Quoted from “Zuvaa: Who We Are“ Now, as the name indicates, this is a tour, which means there will be other locations visited throughout the …

OOTD #50/316: 50s Movie Inspired

I know! Two “Outfit of the Day” posts back to back. I am a little surprised. However, it makes sense, with this unseasonably warm February weather, one would be hard pressed not to pull out some of their best and favorite pieces. So lately, I have been binge watching 50s classic movies on the Turner Classic Movie channel (TCM), Netflix, and from my own personal collection. In particular, the colorful musicals the era is known for such as “An American in Paris” and “The Bandwagon” – featuring Fred Astaire (one of my favorite stars of the period). Not to mention romantic-comedies like “Designing Woman” and “How to Marry a Millionaire.” And that’s not even including my collection of Audrey Hepburn movies! This, however, is nothing new to me. For those who know me personally, they are well aware that this is a regular pastime for my free time.

OOTD #44/322: Coming Full Circle-Skirt

Hello my darlings. I know its been awhile since my last outfit of the day post, and it is kind of ironic that it comes nearly a month after the first one, but these types of posts are not planned. They are done on the fly, when I am feeling especially good about what I am wearing on that day. Today was one of those days for a very particular reason, that being, I came across the designer for the skirt I happen to be wearing! Actually, if I want to be technical, she found me! I happened to be in Old Town Pasadena on this unseasonably warm weekend. With Valentine’s day being tomorrow, and me being as single as a girl can be, my mother, sister, god-mother, and I decided to celebrate ourselves by enjoying an ultra-girly, afternoon tea party at the Tea Rose Garden. A detailed blog post on this outing will be coming within the next few days, but I will say that if you are ever in need of a reason …
